Why install it

Three things a browser tab does not do

It opens from your home screen

An icon beside your other apps, opening full screen with no browser bar. At an event you are handing your phone to somebody, and a visible address bar is an invitation to wander off your card.

It keeps working without a signal

Event Mode stores each captured contact on the device and uploads them when the connection returns. Exhibition halls are exactly where signal fails and exactly where you can least afford to lose a name.

It updates itself

There is no version to check and nothing to reinstall. The next time you open it, you have the current one โ€” the part an app store tends to make slower rather than faster.

Offline

What still works when the signal does not

Event Mode is built for the worst connection you are likely to meet: a hall with three thousand people on one tower. Contacts entered on the capture form are written to the device first and synced afterwards, so a dead signal delays the upload instead of losing the lead.

Sharing your own card still needs a connection on the other person's phone, because their browser is loading a web page. That is the trade for them never having to install anything โ€” and it is why every card also carries a QR code, and why relying on a single method is a bad idea at an event.

Questions about installing

Is this a real app or just a shortcut?
It is a progressive web app. It installs, gets its own icon, opens full screen and keeps working offline where it can, but it is delivered by the browser rather than by a store. The difference you will actually notice is that it updates itself.
Does the person I share my card with need to install anything?
No, and they never will. Installing is only for you. Whoever receives your card opens a web page in whatever browser is already on their phone.
How much space does it take?
A few megabytes, rather than the tens or hundreds a store app usually wants, because most of what it needs is the web page your browser is already loading.
Will there be App Store and Play Store versions?
Both are planned and neither has shipped, so anything you read saying otherwise is ahead of us. Nothing depends on them: writing NFC tags, capturing leads and Event Mode all work today in the browser.
