On Android, write the tag from your dashboard in a few seconds. On iPhone, Apple does not allow a website to write tags, so you copy your link and write it with a free app such as NFC Tools — the dashboard walks you through it.
The hardware
Buy any tag you like. We do not sell them
There is no En Contacto hardware to buy and no proprietary card to be locked into. Any standard NFC tag works — a card for your wallet, a sticker for the back of a phone, a keychain, a disc under a reception desk. NTAG213, NTAG215 and NTAG216 are the common chips and all three are fine; a plain NTAG213 costs very little and holds a link with room to spare.
A tag can be rewritten, so the same card can be pointed at a new colleague when somebody moves on, and one person can carry several — one in a wallet, one stuck to a phone, one on a lanyard for events.
Android and iPhone
Writing a tag differs by phone. Reading one does not
Everyone can read your tag: iPhone XS and newer, and most Android phones from 2017 on, have NFC readers built in and need no app to scan it. Writing is where the two platforms differ, because Apple and Google allow websites different things.
On Android
Open your dashboard in Chrome, tap Link NFC Card, then Start Writing, and hold the tag against the back of the phone. It is written in a couple of seconds, in the browser, with nothing to install.
On iPhone
Apple does not permit a website to write NFC tags at all. The dashboard gives you your card link to copy and walks you through writing it with NFC Tools, a free app from the App Store. It takes about a minute, and only once per tag.
Worth knowing before you print
A tag in somebody's pocket cannot be recalled
A written tag holds your card's address and nothing else, so you can change your photo, your job title, your links and your whole design as often as you like and every tag already handed out keeps working. That is the advantage over paper and it is worth being precise about.
What does break a tag is changing the address itself. Changing your card link is limited to twice a year for that reason, and if you use a custom domain, tags written with it stop working if you give the domain up — so we warn you before a domain lapses rather than letting the tags fail quietly.
Questions before you buy tags
- Do I need a special En Contacto NFC card?
- No. We do not sell hardware at all. Buy any standard NFC card, sticker, keychain or tag — NTAG213, NTAG215 and NTAG216 all work — and link it to your card from your dashboard.
- Does the other person need an app to read it?
- No. Almost every modern phone reads NFC natively: they tap it, the link opens in their browser, and your card appears. Nothing is installed and no account is created.
- Can I rewrite a tag?
- Yes, as many times as you like, unless you deliberately lock it. That means a company card can be reassigned when somebody leaves rather than thrown away.
- What if my phone will not write the tag?
- On Android, in-browser writing needs Chrome — other browsers do not expose it. On iPhone it is never the browser: use NFC Tools, which the dashboard links to with your card address ready to copy. Writing is a one-off, so it is worth borrowing an Android phone if that is easier.
- Is NFC included in the free plan?
- No, writing a tag from the dashboard comes with a paid plan. Reading is free for everybody forever, because that happens on the other person's phone.
